Merck
COZAAR® (losartan potassium tablets) & HYZAAR® (losartan potassium-hydrochlorothiazide tablets)

COZAAR/HYZAAR: Excellent Formulary Coverage; COZAAR/HYZAAR are widely available to over 90% of patients covered by managed care

  • Because of the broad formulary availability of COZAAR/HYZAAR, you can confidently:
    • Prescribe what you feel is an appropriate choice for your patient knowing you are likely to avoid pharmacy callbacks and patient cost complaints
    • Help meet your patients’ needs while minimizing their cost burden (if there is a co-pay differential between formulary and nonformulary products) – particularly for those who are on multiple medications

Please note: Lower acquisition costs do not necessarily reflect a cost advantage in the outcome of the condition treated. In addition, comparison of the co-pays is in no way a comparison of safety or efficacy of the products.

  • HYZAAR 100/12.5 mg (and HYZAAR 100/25 mg) is priced the same as COZAAR 100 mg

Chart: Hypothetical Patient Co-pay Differential Between any Tier 2 Product and any Tier 3 Product

In a winter 2005 survey by Health Strategies Group,* 70 responding managed care pharmacy directors at national and regional plans indicated an average generic (Tier 1) co-pay of $10, an average preferred brand (Tier 2) co-pay of $23, and an average nonpreferred brand (Tier 3) co-pay of $41.

COZAAR and HYZAAR are indicated for the treatment of hypertension. COZAAR may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents, including diuretics. HYZAAR is not indicated for initial therapy of hypertension, except when the hypertension is severe enough that the value of achieving prompt BP control exceeds the risk of initiating combination therapy in these patients.

COZAAR and HYZAAR are contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of these products. Because of the HCTZ component, HYZAAR is also contraindicated in patients with anuria or hypersensitivity to other sulfonamide-derived drugs.

USE IN PREGNANCY: When used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters, drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. When pregnancy is detected, COZAAR and HYZAAR should be discontinued as soon as possible. See WARNINGS, Fetal/Neonatal Morbidity and Mortality.
