An active lifestyle is a great way to help take control of your health.
It helps keep your blood vessels open. It makes your heart strong. And it can help make you feel better overall.
Being active can also help manage your weight, which is really important if you have high blood pressure (BP). Did you know that if you’re overweight, losing as little as 10 pounds can help reduce and/or prevent high BP?
Being more active does not mean running a marathon either. Small but steady changes, such as a brisk walk, can make a difference. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week.
Here are some interesting ways to stay active*:
At home:
- Have fun planting your garden, mowing your lawn, or raking leaves.
- Walk or bike to the corner store instead of driving.
At work:
- Walk to other people’s offices instead of calling them on the phone.
- Get off the bus a few blocks early and walk to work.
- Take a walk around your building during lunch.
- Schedule exercise as you would a meeting.
At play:
- Plan a vacation that includes physical activity.
- See new sights by walking, jogging, or biking.
- At the beach, try walking instead of just sitting.
- Dance—take lessons by yourself or with friends.
- Join a club or center that revolves around a sport.
- Try kayaking or rowing a canoe.
Being active can be fun as well as a good way to keep healthy. Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program.
